    Title:
[California] Official Sight-Seeing Map of Southern California
    Publication:
Los Angeles, California: All-Year Club of Southern California, 1947
    Description:
[California] Official Sight-Seeing Map of Southern California, All-Year Club of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, 1947, 35 x 22 inches.
Folding pamphlet with two maps, one on each side; colors bright; pamphlet clean, unmarked; corners very slightly worn, else fine; very good condition.
One map is titled "Los Angeles County Index to Cities and Points of Interest", and includes a thorough guide to "a three or four-day circular tour of the chief points of interest in Los Angeles County." The second map is titled "Official Sight-Seeing Map of Southern California", and shows nine counties in full color, as well as paragraphs detailing the attractions of each.
A lovely vintage travel guide to Southern California. In addition to all of the sightseeing information, this pamphlet also includes "Driving Hints", one of which reminds readers that hand signals were required by law - in lieu of blinkers, which did not become standard in vehicles until the 1960s. Produced by the All-Year Club of Southern California, which was founded in 1921 by a group of businessmen with the purpose of promoting California as a year-round tourist destination, rather than just a winter retreat for easterners eager to escape New England winters. This effort proved hugely successful, cementing southern California and Los Angeles County as a popular year-round vacation destination.
Rare; three copies in OCLC as of January 2024. Very good.
