Large wall map from 1907 for the Tonopah Mining District. If you are looking for a pristine and complete wall map, this is not your map. But if you want a copy of the rare 1907 MacDonald & Moran map and have the money for some restoration, this may be for you. Please examine the photos provided.
The majority of this map is bright and clean. It's just the corners and top edge where there are problems. Wooden hanger at top is almost completely detached. Bottom hanger intact. Three of the four corners missing small portions of the map, but no content is missing. Backed with linen which is missing or frayed in numerous locations. Fair Condition.
We find only Yale and Huntington holding this map; very uncommon in commerce.
Silver was discovered in the Nevada desert in the spring of 1900 setting off yet another rush to the arid southwest. One of the claims, the Mizpah, became one of the West's richest silver mines that operated for over four decades. The town first was called Butler after the prospector who made the initial discovery of silver. In 1905 the name was changed to Tonopah.
Irving MacDonald arrived in Tonopah from Butte, Montana, in 1904, soon working as a Land Agent and attorney. William J. Moran was a native Nevadan but was working in Butte, Montana, as a mineral surveyor where he met MacDonald. By 1904 they reunited in Tonopah and teamed up as the firm MacDonald & Moran.
The MacDonald & Moran map stands as one of the best published, as stated in early Nye County Nevada biography.
