    Description

This 7" high x 4 5/8" wide [at widest point] amethyst handmade, mouthblown bottle commemorates the New Bern [N.C.] First Provincial Congress. It is thus embossed on the front, with an image of the famous New Bern clock tower embossed in the center and "1774 Bicentennial 1974" on front near base. Base is open pontil with "C" "B" embossed for Clevenger Brothers, a glassworks which closed some quarter of a century ago. The reverse is embossed with "August 25-27, 1774 / The First / Provincial Congress / in America / Called by John Harvey  / in Open Defiance / of British." Scarce at only 215 bottles made. The bottle comes with a colorful brochure put out in 1975 by the State of North Carolina in commemoration of the "Firsts" in efforts for Freedom of the Revolutionary cause. The brochure illustrates and briefly describes some of such events.
