THE SEX PISTOLS, THE DAMNED, JOHNNY THUNDERS' HEARTBREAKERS and THE CLASH United Kingdom Tour 1976 Reproduction Concert Poster
This is a high quality lithograph reproduction concert poster for the Sex Pistols famous ill-fated UK tour of late 1976. The Pistols are widely credited with initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom, with Rolling Stone Magazine suggesting the band "came to spark and personify one of the few truly critical moments in pop culture-the rise of punk". On the heels of the band's first single, "Anarchy in the U.K." released on 26 November 1976, the Pistols caroused through the Kingdom in December, creating various controversies which captivated Britain and often eclipsed their music. Despite a common perception that punk bands couldn't play their instruments, contemporary music press reviews and live recordings reveal the Pistols to have been a tight, competent and ferocious live band. Their shows from this tour repeatedly faced difficulties from authorities, and public appearances often ended in disaster and riot. Many of the concerts were either dogged by hostile press or cancelled by local authorities. My favorite quote from this period is Rotten remarking "I don't understand it, all we're trying to do is destroy everything."
Along with Rotten and the boys on this tour were The Damned, the first British punk band to release a single ("New Rose") and put out an album (Damned Damned Damned). They had opened for the Pistols on previous shows and are considered one of the founders of punk and goth rock. Then there was Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls with his band the Heartbreakers, also with Dolls drummer Jerry Nolan. And of course The Clash, who played their first live gig opening for the Sex Pistols on July 4th of that year. The Clash were one of the most successful and iconic bands from the original wave of punk rock in this period. They were legendary for their intense stage performances and with their skilled musicianship stood apart from their punk peers.
An historic poster for several legendary bands, this high quality offset lithograph reproduction measures approx. 13 x 19" and is in mint condition. FREE handbills included!
